This position supports the Customer Innovation Technology team in identifying and pursuing early-stage technologies that can be used to create customer value in energy management and effective product and program adoption focused in the areas of demand response (DR), distributed energy resources (DER), beneficial electrification (BE), and smart grid solutions. The role will support the investigation and evaluation of new technical and business opportunities based on regulatory requirements, product development, and industry trends. Under general oversight of the Customer Innovation Manager, this position will drive innovation projects that yield both customer and Company value. The role will also serve as IT liaison for the Innovation Team cybersecurity efforts to the broader ComEd IT organization. 

This position will work closely with multiple departments, included by not limited to Demand Response (DR), Energy Efficiency (EE), Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Marketing, Information Technology (IT), and Utility of the Future (U of F) departments – each of which ties closely to the Company’s investments towards a smarter grid. This position will also assist in managing subcontractors and vendors delivering supporting services to ComEd and its customers. This position will have a key role in supporting projects through end-to-end product lifecycle – from concept development to prototyping through piloting and onto implementation. Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.


  • With general oversight, manage scope, schedule, and budget for innovation assessments/projects of new products and services within the residential and small commercial market. This includes overseeing subcontractors/vendors, verifying product IT coordination and data security, internal departmental coordination, forecasting, performance reporting, business case development, evaluation, tracking performance metrics, and other required internal or external reporting. 

  • Act as Innovation Team IT liaison. Support IT-related projects and technologies in the innovation cycle. Develop and implement cybersecurity measures to protect the IT-related innovation projects.

  • Support safe and organized laboratory operations within the two innovation laboratories. Perform technology and product concept testing as needed; support internet of things (IoT) and virtualization technologies.

  • Investigate new industry trends and “behind the meter” products and services that will enhance the value of DR, AMI, solar, and electrification to customers.


  • This is an individual contributor position that woks under general supervision and frequently performs non-routine work. This position is expected to resolve most questions and problems through interaction with internal and/or external stakeholders, executives, directors, managers, and staff across the organization, and refers only the most complex issues to higher levels.
  • On occasion, may mentor less experienced colleagues
  • Reviewing (QAQC) invoices and financial information for accuracy and appropriate charges
  • Reporting of information that might include multiple data sources and input from a variety of stakeholders
  • Attending meetings, contributing to, and tracking action items to completion
  • Leading initiatives requiring collecting and coordinating information between external and internal stakeholders
  • Managing, tracking, and implementing early-stage technology assessments
  • Providing IT and financial support to the Sr Program Manager(s) and department Manager
  • Operating and maintaining safe, organized lab testing
  • Building up to work independently and making day-to-day decisions
  • May require working extended hours and/or shift work to support business operations
  • Strom Duty role required

  • For construction project management: Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field and 2 - 5 years relevant project management or related experience, OR High School Diploma and 6 - 9 years relevant project management or related experience;
  • For non-construction project management: Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or related field and 2 - 5 years relevant project management or related experience, OR High School Diploma and 6 - 9 years relevant project management or related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus, establish trust, communicate effectively and foster culture change
  • Ability to work independently and as a team leader including the ability to handle conflicting priorities in a multi-task environment
  • Demonstrated leadership, communications and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement process enhancements and efficiencies including technology and performance
  • Demonstrated strong judgment and time management skills
  • Demonstrated project management skills, writing skills and PC skills including Work, Excel, Access, Power Point, Project, Passport
  • Valid driver's license and access to an automobile


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, IT, Computer Science, or Business

  • General understanding of demand response, electrification, and behind-the-meter (BTM) & smart grid technologies

  • Broad understanding and/or experience in R&D or product development, IT/cybersecurity, or engineering related discipline
